Kangana was born at Bhambla (now Surajpur) into a Rajput family.

Her father, Amardeep Ranaut, is a businessman, while her mother, Asha Ranaut, used to work as a school teacher.

She has an older sister, Rangoli Chandel, who works as her manager, and a younger brother, Akshat.

The actress grew up in a joint family in Bhambla and described her childhood as “simple and happy.”

She described herself as “stubborn and rebellious” while growing up: “If my father would gift my brother a plastic gun and get a doll for me, I would not accept that. I questioned the discrimination.”

She never subscribed to the hen expected stereotypes, so she experimented with Fashion from a young age. Her neighbors would think of her clothes and accessories as “bizarre.”

When it comes to her education, she attended the DAV School in Chandigarh, where she pursued science.

She originally wanted to become a doctor since her parents liked that.

After training under the theatre director Arvind Gaur, she made her film debut in thriller Gangster (2006), for which she was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Then, Kangana was praised for her performances in the dramas Woh Lamhe (2006), Life in a… Metro (2007) and Fashion (2008), for which she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She was featured in the commercially successful film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010).

In 2013, she played a mutant in the science fiction film Krrish 3, which is one o the highest-grossing Indian films.

In addition, Ranaut won two consecutive National Film Awards for Best Actress for her performance in the comedy-drama Queen (2014).
